Gossip aside, this has a happy ending. The space rented by J. L. Moreno in the last years of his life in Europe continues to be very well used. The day I finally got to see it from the inside, two female artists were exhibiting their work there. Mika Maruyama, the young Japanese secretary of the Austrian Association of Women Artists, explained that the area is now divided into three rooms, differently from Moreno's time. One of them is used “for meetings, for lectures, for workshops, for artist talks”, for instance. Well, as far as the gossip goes, Austrian psychodramatist and expert Michael Wieser could probably clarify about the rumor that some rental fees were not paid by the tenant. Is that true, Michael? In any case, next time we will be moving with young Moreno to Istanbul, but that’s another story.
This is the twenty-fourth video of the series on “Retracing J. L. Moreno’s Steps”. Those who were unable to watch the previous ones can still do so by clicking the following links:

The exhibition Double Lives is a group exhibition at MUMOK in Vienna (Austria) that has its focus on visual artists who wrote or produced music, who performed music in public, or who were or are members of artists’ bands. The exhibition, curated by curated by Eva Badura-Triska und Edek Bartz, really “exhibits” music, with large projections of videos and photographs of concert and studio performances that give visitors a sense of being there “live,” while also illustrating the significance of different kinds of performance situation.
Among the videos that Double Lives features are two films that VernissageTV has produced: Angela Bulloch & David Grubbs: The Wired Salutation; and Jutta Koether / Performance at Galerie Francesca Pia, Zurich:

https://vernissage.tv/2008/08/28/jutta-koether-performance-at-galerie-francesca-pia-zurich/
The artists and works in the show range from the early twentieth century to the present day. There is Marcel Duchamp and the futurists, Yves Klein and Fluxus artists Nam June Paik and Yoko Ono, key figures from the 1960s and 1970s such as A. R. Penck, Hanne Darboven, Gerhard Rühm, and Hermann Nitsch. Representatives of proto-punk like Captain Beefheart and Alan Vega were precursors of the many artists’ bands of the 1980s, in which artists like Mike Kelley, Albert Oehlen, Heimo Zobernig, and Pipilotti Rist played. The stylistically more heterogeneous scene of the 1990s to today is represented by Jutta Koether, Stephen Prina, Angela Bulloch, Carsten Nicolai, Christian Marclay, Billy Childish, Emily Sundblad, and others.
This video documents the opening of the exhibition, featuring a live concert with visuals by Phill Niblock with Martin Zrost.
